Photography Suggestions
Digital or film, video or still, the potential for scenic and wildlife photography is almost boundless along the Crystal Coast. Graceful long necked wading birds searching the marsh grass for a bite to eat, wild ponies making a life on an otherwise uninhabited island, shore birds, river otters, dolphin, the possibilities are endless! Other worthwhile images may include local watermen at work, sportsmen plying the water for that trophy catch, boats and, of course, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
When photographing from a boat there are a few things to keep in mind. First remember that the water is a dynamic, ever moving platform. Slow films and shutter speeds will likely only result in blurred photos. Use fast films, medium to wide aperatures and quick shutter speeds to insure a crisp, clear shot. Similarly, long telephoto lenses may be difficult to frame and hold quality compositions with. You may want to stick with medium telephoto to wide angle equipment. The water reflects a lot of light, a UV and/or polarizing filter may be a welcome addition.
In general, water and photo equipment don't mix well. Be sure to bring a dry box or dry bag for stowing gear when not in use. We'll do our best to keep the spray to a minimum when underway, but "open boat" and "dry" are words that seldom go together.
On all photography charters we provide a cooler of ice with a selection of bottled water and soft-drinks. You're encouraged to bring a snack and/or some lunch. The weather can change quickly, dress in layers to be prepared for temperature changes. You may want to bring along some rain gear as well.
